Every month, our team heads out along the coast between Samsun and Giresun to collect samples for the MicroDanger project. We take ballast water from ships at sea, seawater from around fish farms, and sand from local beaches. Back in the lab, each sample is checked for microplastics using the same methods as our partners, so we can see how our part of the Black Sea compares with the rest.
Month by month, these samples are building a clearer picture of where microplastics come from and where they end up.
MicroDanger (BSB01214) is funded by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme and brings together partners from Georgia, Romania, Türkiye and Ukraine. The project runs until June 2028.
